Since moving to Europe, we have had the amazing opportunity to attend art exhibitions in various cities and countries. In addition to the curated exhibitions held in galleries and museums, we witness the ways that neighbourhoods teem with public and street art representing the local culture.

We are especially drawn to art that reflects a cross cultural identity,  challenges the viewers, questions traditions, and creates dialogue. So, we were delighted to attend three international art biennials this year where we experienced art that did just that.

According to the Biennial Foundation, there are over 150 international contemporary art biennials currently in existence. These are held in numerous countries throughout the world such as Italy, Korea, the UAE, Brazil, France, Senegal, and Australia, among others.

We had the privilege of attending the Bienal de la Habana in Cuba and two in Sweden. The first was OpenART 2015 in Örebro followed by the Göteborg International Biennal for Contemporary Art in Gothenburg.

These events are culturally significant because they feature artists from around the world addressing local and global issues in creative and socially relevant ways. At times, the entire city transforms into an open air museum.

We
do not yet know where we will travel in 2016 but wherever we go, we will search out the arts and keep you informed.

Have a great New Year!
